May 13, 2009, marks the tenth anniversary in the unsolved murder of a North Central Florida college student.
While there is no resolution. the case began with a decisive moment. It was a difficult choice. On May 13, 1999, Alachua County Sheriff Deputy Steve Maynard was the first officer on the scene of a shooting at Hickory Hills Apartments. He saw a driver speeding from the complex who might have been the shooter, but Maynard ran to the victim.
He found Shane Crutchfield laying in the doorway of his apartment, bleeding from a gunshot wound. Maynard immediately began CPR.
Shane, a 23 year old student at then Sante Fe Community College, died from a single gunshot to the upper body.
