Almost two years ago, patrons of "The Venue" nightclub poured on to University avenue in downtown Gainesville. It was two a.m.--closing time for the bar.

Inside the bar earlier that evening, there had been a disturbance. Two men had been ripping off gold chains from the necks of some of the patrons. Tempers flared and words were exchanged.
