8/7/12 Ask-A-Vet: Feline Distemper
Dr Tecla Myrick was here today to talk about Feline Distemper, or Feline Panleukopenia.
It is a very contagious virus that can affect kittens and unvaccinated adult cats.
It is spread by all body secretions or by pet toys or even just from petting an infected cat and then petting other felines.
Symptoms include loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting/diarrhea and will eventually lead to death.
There is no treatment for the virus itself, but treating the infected animal involves isolation, fluid therapy and antibiotics.
The shelter temporarily stopped taking cats until all the cats were tested and it was safe to bring in new cats.
The majority of cats tested negative and the shelter is now able to take in cats again.
Prevention is the best treatment for this disease. Vaccinations work very well and should begin when the kitten is 6 weeks old.
All cats taken into the shelter are vaccinated immediately.
Remember to always consult your veterinarian if you have questions or concerns.
