Family looking for lost dog

ALACHUA, Fla. (WCJB)- It's been more than a week since Petey, a 9-month-old puppy has been able to cuddle up with his family.

Tabitha Mauro says she was rear-ended by a drunk driver in Alachua while at a stop sign near County Road 235 and 235A, near the train tracks.

Petey was in the van with her.

"The van doors got open and Petey ran down the side of the road,” Mauro said.

Petey ran into the woods.

The family isn't giving up hope hanging up flyers of the American Staffordshire and Chihuahua mix near the area.

"His personality can't be replaced, he's awesome. he will give you high five and he'll shake and the kids love walking with him and walking him around. We need our Petey back, we miss him,” Mauro said.

Mauro is crossing her fingers as she slowly recovers from the car accident.

"I really don't want to go through surgery without Petey. I don’t… I can’t,” she said.

Petey is more than just a dog, he's a member of the family.

"He helps me with my PTSD and he is there for me to comfort me and it was something that no one could take away from me and now I lost him and I don't really know how to cope with life without him,” Mauro said,

Petey was last seen wearing a camo-green collar.
