Gainesville Police release statement about their undocumented immigrants policy

Gainesville Police released a statement Tuesday morning about their policy on undocumented immigrants.

Following a domestic violence incident that involved Guatemalan nationals and reports of them now being detained by ICE, GPD has released a statement saying that they will not be reporting or begin deportation proceedings for any of the immigrants involved.

The department has an order that says if an officer comes in contact with an immigrant, it should be noted in the report and the record manager had to forward the information to the appropriate agency.

They say there are currently no federal regulations that require local law enforcement to report. Chief Tony Jones has requested that a portion of the general order be re-written to stop any confusion when it comes to dealing with foreigners. And that anybody who needs law enforcement in Gainesville should feel safe calling for help.
