Today Gilchrist County's Blue Springs had its official opening ceremony as a state park.
The once privately owned park was purchased by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection last October. Portions of the spring were opened to the public in November after Hurricane Irma cleanup. The campgrounds opened last week, in time for the park to be fully operational for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The ceremony officially commemorates the park as "Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park", the 175th state park in Florida. The state park status allows state funding to be used to provide updates in the park, like access for people who are handicapped. It also grants assurance that the park will remain untouched so future generations can enjoy the crystal clear waters.
Visitors can visit the park for free this Saturday.
