Weekend Planner

Happy Friday everyone!

Kanapaha Botanical Gardens is always a nice place to visit, any time of year. The gardens, including the state's largest public display of bamboos, are a treat to visit. This weekend there's something extra for children. Saturday is Kids Day at Kanapaha. There'll be farm animals you can touch...and both dry and wet bounce houses (bring your swimsuit and towel). There'll also be face painting and a magician to entertain throughout the day. The event goes from 11 am to 5 pm at the gardens located just off Archer Road at 4700 Southwest 58th Drive in Gainesville.

Another fun activity for families: UF's Family Fishing Days. The free monthly events, held at the UF/IFAS fishing ponds, are part of the Fishing for Success program. It gives families a fun, safe way to enjoy a Saturday. Anglers, regardless of experience, can catch largemouth bass, channel catfish and bream from six large ponds. It is catch and release, by the way. They have loaner poles and bait, but you can bring your own. The event is Saturday from 8 am to noon. The ponds are located off Millhopper Road at 7922 NW 71st Street.

North of Gainesville, Stephen Foster State Park in White Springs is host to Antiques, Arts and Collectibles Day Saturday. Collectors will be displaying unique arts, antiques, classic cars and other collectible items. Kids can take in free instrument making workshops. There'll also be craft demonstrations.... and food will be available, too. It's from 9 am to 4 pm Saturday at the park just off US Highway 41 in White Springs.

Back in Gainesville, the Florida Museum of Natural History continues its Creative B Movie Series this evening. At the event you'll get a chance to meet scientists, special effects experts and artists as they discuss this week's movie, The Time Machine. Aside from seeing a pretty cool sci-fi flick, you'll hear the panel explore the balance between science and art in the film. The panel discussion starts at the museum at 7 pm...followed by the movie.

If you'd like to take in a show, The Hippodrome's musical Forever Plaid has been held over. It continues at The Hipp until July 30th.

Enjoy your weekend!
