Happy Friday everyone!
On Fridays this time of year, you can always depend on the "Free Fridays" concerts in downtown Gainesville to help get your weekend off to a good start. Tonight the band The Savants of Soul is taking to the stage at the Bo Diddley Plaza. The 9 piece band is built on a mix of soul, jazz, blues and rock 'n' roll. The music goes from 8 to 10 tonight. The concerts are put on by Gainesville's Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department... with some funding from Culture Builds Florida.
If motorcycles are your thing, Starke is the place to be this weekend. The Starke Bike Fest got its start in 2006 thanks to the efforts of bike enthusiasts, local businesses and the City of Starke, along with Bradford County. It's a great place to hang with other motorcyclists, and check out the bike show. There'll also be live music, food, a swap meet, burn outs and multiple contests. The event is tonight, Saturday and Sunday in downtown Starke.
In case you've been out of the loop, our area will be affected by a solar eclipse coming up about 10 days from now. If you're wondering what it's all about...and how you can view it, head to the Florida Museum of Natural History Sunday. The museums "Ask a Scientist: There Goes the Sun!" event will delve into the upcoming eclipse. Bring your questions with you as James Albury, co-host of the PBS program Star Gazers (and director of Santa Fe's Kika Silva Pla Planetarium), will be there. It goes from 1 to 4 Sunday.
Silver Springs State Park is having its garden tour this Sunday. The second Sunday of every month, a park ranger tells guests about the gardens history...and you'll learn what flowers grow there. You'll see the Courtyard, Crossroads, Camellia, Fire and Water, and Wildflower Gardens during the tour. It's this Sunday afternoon from 1 to 1:45.
Also this weekend, for old school country music fans, Grand Ole Opry star and country singer Jeannie Seely will be at the Orange Blossom Opry in Weirsdale Saturday.
Enjoy your weekend!
