Strength Training in Junior High
Some seventh graders are getting more than a workout during PE class.  Â
"It is definitely a foot in the door for them for lifetime fitness," said coach Kris Palmerton.
He says they are learning the proper techniques for strength training -- not to be confused with weightlifting or bodybuilding.  Â
"Everything we do is high repetitions, very low weight, increasing the flexibility, muscle endurance," he said. "We certainly are not trying to increase muscle mass at this age group by any means." Â Â
Lifting heavy weights can result in injury -- straining young muscles, tendons and growth plates. Palmerton believes middle school-aged students have the right skills and body development to follow his program. still, he keeps a close eye on the class, watching for mistakes.  Â
"That's the key, is learning how to use the machines properly, proper extension, contraction of the muscle," said Palmerton.Â
He tells students proper training will help their performance in other sports. while these young teens may not worry about it now, the exercises can lead to better heart and lung function, lower cholesterol, stronger bones and a fitness habit that could last well beyond 7th grade. Â
