Florida Lotto Raises Millions for Education

Florida Lotto Raises Millions for Education

Published February 1st, 2013

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP):

A new report says education proceeds from the Florida Lottery increased by $130 million, or nearly 11 percent, in the last budget year.

The annual audit by the Legislature's Office of Program Policy Analysis & Government Accountability on Friday also suggested some options for increasing those returns.

The Lottery transferred $1.3 billion to the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund in the budget year ending June 30. State economists are estimating a more modest increase of $48 million for the current budget year.

The report notes Florida is one of only two lottery states that doesn't participate in the multi-state Mega Millions game. California is the other but has announced plans to join.

Other options include on-line ticket sales and a draw game called fast keno often played at bars and restaurants.
