UF Study Shows Smart Forestry Techniques Can Help Conserve Water

GAINESVILLE- When it rains, it pours-- but it doesn't necessarily drain into the aquifer without a little help.
Researchers at the University of Florida have found that reducing vegetation can help conserve water.
Researchers looked at 10 years of data to determine a statistical model, to predict the increases in water yield, that results from reducing vegetation on forested land.
"Here we wanted to look at an option for a more sustained approach to increased water supply and protect our important water resources through the way we manage forests," says UF Forestry Researcher, Daniel McLaughlin.
The study found that between 70 and 100 percent of water returns to the atmosphere through "transpiration"-- which is water evaporating off of plants.
There are two prescribed burns scheduled in Alachua County Thursday.
