Published September 26th, 2013
MIAMI - A single day of high flying thrills. It’s the first National Red Bull Flugtag-- Which stands for flight day in German and the Gator Aviators are celebrating a victory.
Miami is one of the 5 cities across the country to participate in this event. And out of the 200 teams that applied to compete in Miami, nearly 30 were chosen to participate-- one of them-- the Gator Aviators.
Christopher Roda one of the team members for the Gator Aviators said, "We just got selected for Red Bull Flugtag... But we're minus one guy. You want to help build a plane and shove it off a big cliff? Oh! Of course!"
During the first National Red Bull Flugtag event different groups from all over the country attempt to fly homemade air crafts. A team composed of 5 students from the University of Florida. The Gator Aviators were out here to proof if they'd sink or fly. Max Famiglietti the pilot for the Gator Aviators, said, "Hardest thing definitely building these wings right here... Not only are they really delicate they are intricate."
Jon Kistemaker, also a student behind the Gator Aviators said, "The widest possible length we could have is 28 feet and we're maxing that out and we're making the wings the big as they can be."
Being in the University of Miami's backyard, the gator aviators were ready for some friendly competition.Rocky Flood another student in the team, said, "The University of Miami has a bunch of engineers and their building a team as well. So as long as we fly further than them, I am going to be pretty happy."
And that they did. They fly further then um by about 20 feet.
While they didn't win 1st 2nd or 3rd place the Gators turned out to be the crowds favorite as they won the "People's Choice." Aaron Alanguilan, the captain of Gator Aviators said, "It's not about the journey but about the destination along the way."
Each craft must meet the size and weight requirement. Contestants are judged based on distance, creativity and showmanship.
The Gator Aviators are now competing for the national title of "People's Choice." You can vote online by visiting: http://redbullflugtagusa.com/ or if you text MIA25 to the number: 72855; participants can vote up to ten times.
