Medal of Honor
Only 3,400 americans have ever been awarded the Medal of Honor and this Sunday, our country is recognizing them with the first annual National Medal of Honor Day. Among the honorees is Alachua County's own Duane Dewey. He's one of only one hundred and eleven recipients still alive today. The debate over whether to make this a national holiday has been ongoing since 1968. The U.S. Senate has finally passed a resolution marking March 25th, as National Medal of Honor Day. Cross Creek's Medal of Honor recipient Duane Dewey and his wife are happy to see that it's finally official. The Korean War Veterans Color Guard is hosting a reception in his honor tomorrow afternoon. "It means a lot to me but I never thought of myself as a hero," Dewey said. While Dewey is very modest about his accomplishments, his family and the rest of the country are extremely proud of him. Duane's wife added,  "I'm so happy they have 'Medal of Honor Day' because it means so much to my family and the rest of the country."  Thalia Hayden, WCJB TV-20 News
