Leo Boatman Pleads Guilty
Leo Boatman pleaded guilty to both counts of "first degree murder with a firearm." In exchange, the state attorney's office agreed to not seek the death penalty. Circuit Judge Willard Pope sentenced Boatman to two consecutive life terms without the chance of parole.
The move comes after State Attorney Brad King talked with both families, and informed them that the average death row inmate in Florida sits on death row for 12 years before being executed.
The Peck and Parker families say they couldn't wait that long, and that they want closure now.
Amber Peck's father, David Peck, says today should be a celebration of his daughter and John's lives, instead of focusing on Boatman. "She died doing what she was enjoying. She was out with habitat, she was out in the woods, she was enjoying nature, and so this is her life, and this is what makes it able to go on."
Both families had an opportunity to address the court before the sentencing. Parker's mom said the Ocala National Forest was like her son's own backyard, and that he loved the outdoors. The Pecks called Boatman a coward and said he may have killed Amber's body, but he could never kill her spirit.
