Dangerous Strain of Staph Infection in North Central Florida
By Dan Breitwieser, WCJB TV 20 News.
Santa Fe High School has had 10 students come down with a staph infection since the beginning of the school year. Two have been identified as MRSA, the strain that is resistant to antibiotics and killed a Virginia high school senior last week.
Wednesday, students brought home more than just homework--a letter detailing a series of staph infections.
"I was really scared at first because you always worry about your kid's health," says Suzette Dunn, mother of a Santa Fe sophomore.
Principal Bill Herschleb also sent an automated phone message to almost 12-hundred homes to make sure parents got the word. He says most of the cases can be connected through contact sports like football. Notices were posted Wednesday that the locker room was going to get a deep clean.
"We're in relatively uncharted territory," says Herschleb. "Schools haven't really had to respond to issues of such great community health impact as we do right now."
Though some parents like Peggy Massey are taking matters into their own hands.
"I did call the doctor today to make my son an appointment to be checked just in case," says Massey. "I thought it was allergies. But you never know, you can't be too safe."
Schools county-wide are also playing it safe. They are giving special training to janitors, installing anti-bacterial soap stations in showers and sanitizing all the school buses.
So far all Santa Fe students have, or are expected to make, a full recovery.
