Parking Garage Security
Even though investigators said he might have left Florida however, local merchants said they are paying extra attention to their surroundings at the scene of the crime.
Nick Conners was one of approximately two dozen delivery persons working out of Five Star Pizza next to the Southwest Downtown Parking Garage around 2:20 Sunday morning. He said it is not uncommon to see the police in action once the bars close.
"After the clubs get out, sometimes the college students will just get in little fights, but usually the cops are pretty quick to break it up though," Conners recalled.
Last weekend however, an argument turned into murder. According to vendors who use the garage, they're leery even during daytime hours after the death of Andrew Arosemena of Tallahassee.
"It's really a pretty safe place to be downtown and especially on Friday and Saturday nights, but that was very unusual," B.J. Webster, owner of Downtown Barbershop said while exiting the lot.
Arosemena, 22, was one of about 500 people who used the garage that night.
"Any area where you'll have thousands of people who have been out partying, there's always a chance something like this could happen," Gainesville Police Lt. Keith Kameg explained. "There could be a fight."
Nelson's accomplice Antwan Maye, 25, turned himself in Monday morning. Police officers say they are looking at their protocols but with 15 officers within a three block area, there was not much more that could be done.
"You can't stop people that have no moral compass," Kameg said. "You can just try and be at the right place at the right time and make an arrest when you can."
This was the fourth death following a University of Florida football game in four years.
"It was ridiculous, like they have nothing better to do than get in fights in the parking lots after they drink all night," Conners said. "It's ridiculous."
