Making a Difference in Lives of Soldiers
Yesterday our Bob Williams introduced us to a military family in Marion County depending on our help as part of "Oprah's Big Give" North Central Florida. So far more than $20,000 has been raised to help families in need as a result of the war in Iraq.
Tonight Bob is back to introduce us to a family you may already know, the Mixson's. We last saw the Mixson's over the Christmas holidays. Since then the family has tried to keep a positive spirit in a tough situation. When we received word ABC would offer stations $10,000 in the spirit of "Oprah's Big Give", we decided military families like the Mixson's who live in Williston could use our help.
There story started with a horrible phone call no parent ever wants to get. "When I hung up from the phone I was in the process of losing control of my emotions managed to communicate to them the severity of his injuries," said John Mixson, Catlin's Father.
Those injuries were caused when a bomb blast went through a humvee in Iraq throwing 21-year old Catlin Mixson in a ditch on the side of the road. In order to save his life, both legs had to be amputated, and doctors had to rebuild portions of his arm. "I'm very upset that this has happened to him that he has to live the rest of his life struggling without having his legs, arm injured, and the emotion that he'll have to live with his buddies death," said Karon Mixson, Catlin's Mother.
Since his last visit during the holidays...Catlin has been in an army hospital in San Antonio, Texas. His sister is with him everyday while mom and dad try to piece things together for the day he comes home for good. "The financial outlook because our lives have been disrupted, we have a lot of things to tend to because of this incident," said John.
"I still don't sleep at night...it's every single day is a struggle, especially when i look at the news hear how many more have died today my heart hurts for every single family," said Karon.
This is why we want you to help the Mixsons and other military families by going to our business partner M & S BANK and making a donation. A Special account has been set up for contributions to "Oprah's Big Give", DAV Chapter 90. Contributions are tax deductible.
Just to give you an example of one need for the Mixson's. Travel money for Karon and John to go to San Antonio when their son has his next operations, and there will be several others.
