Family of 20 Year Old Sentenced to Death Speaks Out
He's the youngest person to be placed on death row since 1976.
On February 8th, a Marion County judge found Renaldo McGirth guilty of first degree murder.
Now... that judge has decided he will pay for that crime with his own life.
Mcgirth received the death sentence for his role in planning and executing the murder of villages resident... Diana Miller.
McGirth got the death sentence. His partner Jarrord Roberts got life in prison. But... a third person who may have been involved in the conspiracy hasn't been charged. Mcgirth's mother says she's a woman on a mission. she wants to appeal her son's case so that everyone who may have been involved gets the same punishment.
"They overlooked the missing piece to the puzzle."
The missing piece McGirth's mother... Michelle says she's fighting to have in her son's appeal
is Sheila Miller.
MIller was shown in surveillance video obtained by the Marion Sheriff's Office, being pushed around in her wheelchair at the Oaks Mall in Gainsesville by the three suspects just two hours after the 9-1-1 call came in.
Prosecuting State attorney agrees Miller was involved.
"The mechanism by which Mr. McGirth came into contact with her parents...I mean absent her...it would have never happened."
Miller took the stand during the trial and testified that she gave McGirth directions to her parents home and was taken by him to provide bank card passcodes. She was never charged or tried.
McGirth's mother says everyone involved...needs to be tried fairly.
"She's the mastermind behind this whole ordeal however they still choose to ignore it."
McGirth says she's sorry for the loss to the miller family.
"If I could trade places with Mrs. Miller I would.
I carry him(Mr.Miller) in my sprit just as well as my son everyday. I hurt. I know what it's like to lose a loved one. I lost my brother...he was murdered..by three white males that we never got justice for.
McGirth's aunt Stephanie Robinson says the entire trial was racially unjust.
"Nobody can say that justice is blind and that it's without color..because I see by experience that it has a color."
Jarrord Roberts was found guilty of manslaughter.
Renaldo McGirth has already been transferred from the Marion County jail to Florida's death row.
His parents and family say they will appeal and they want all members to be held accountable.
