Burglary Caught In Progress
Police say Johnathan Gillis, who recently lost his job and is homeless, entered through this fence ripping this screen door leading to the back of the kitchen. They say he grabbed about $500 worth of crawfish and shrimp. Then headed back out...only to find out the jig was up.
"They found the suspect inside the fenced area, he began running back and forth," Zaqzou.
When the suspect realized he was caught and had no way out, he headed to the roof. That's when the showdown between him and "Dozer," a Police K9 dog, began.
"The subject started fighting the dog," said Sgt. Angy Scroble with the Ocala Police Department. "He actually put his hands around the throat of the dog attempting to choke him, and started slamming the dogs head against one of the walls."
"I grabbed him by the hair and on the sides of his neck, and I just held him," said Gillis.
Police say even with Dozer attacking him, Gillis refused to back down.
"He was tazed by officer Brown at that time but did not comply," said Scroble. "He didn't stop resisting. He continued to fight."
Gillis was pepper sprayed and arrested. Police say Gillis struggled until an officer punched him in the back of the head. He was taken to the hospital, and then booked into Marion County Jail. Dozer and the officers had minor injuries.
At the time of his arrest, Gillis had a warrant out of Orange County for violation of probation on another burglary charge.
His charges include battery on a law enforcement canine and resisting arrest with violence- -an expensive price to pay for a seafood dinner.
