Front Yard or Boat Yard?

Front Yard or Boat Yard?

Published August 25th, 2008

By Dan Breitwieser, WCJB TV 20 News.

Electric power has been restored, but some are still dealing with mother nature's power in the form of lots and lots of water. And Fay exposed an old problem for one Levy County family.

It's a front yard that more closely resembles a boatyard. And they blame the mess on the state.

Bring your boots to get to the front door. But the Rodgers family is trying to make the best of it, catching crawdads, watching the fish fight the current, or enjoying a leisurely float through the front yard.

"We've had lots of rain come through," says Lisa Rodgers. "But nothing like a big rain-maker like what Fay did."

Lisa's husband Brian Rodgers says the water was 15 inches deep until Sunday morning. By Monday afternoon it was down to three.

The water is brown, pretty fast moving, it smells bad, there are water moccasins, maybe even alligators. That's why the Rodgers aren't excited by their riverfront property.

They say the issue first popped up after the storms of 2003 with water flowing from the Goethe State Forest. They thought the Division of Forestry had taken care of it.

"It {the flooding} was natural," says Division of Forestry Supervisor Mike Penn. "That it was nothing that we caused by activity on state forest land."

But Mike Penn says the Rodgers live in a flood plain and it was up to them to respond to a letter... in which they would agree to accept the consequences if the Division of Forestry made some minor actions to try to stop the flooding.

"We were trying to help them," says Penn. "We were trying to see if there is anything we could to do to help and we hadn't heard from them since 2003."

Which is a small consolation to the Rodgers slogging through their driveway.

"I've got to get a new A/C unit because it was submerged under water," says Rodgers. "Replacing the duct units, taking up all the trash that was flowing down the water way."

Penn says it may be possible to restart the process to make the changes that could help the Rodgers in the future. But it's no guarantee it will completely take care of the problem.
