Pedestrian Killed In Hit And Run Crash
Earlier in the evening, he had been a passenger in a DUI traffic stop.
Hummel's fiance's sister was pulled over for weaving all over the road with Hummel sitting in the front seat. But, his fiance now wishes they would have both been taken to jail.
Nikki Sullivan calls her deceased fiance Matt Hummel a perfect adopted father for her three boys.
"He thought he was the next American Idol, and he couldn't carry a tune, but I loved to hear him sing," said Sullivan.
But just sad words Friday remembering his life, and lots and lots of tears from loved ones. It all started last Friday night with Hummel enjoying a few drinks at the Red Barn Saloon in Old Town. He eventually met up with Sullivan's sister to get a ride home. FHP pulled her over with a blood alcohol level of .088.
From where the initial traffic stop was made at the Bear's Den on US 27 in Fanning Springs, it's just a short walk, just a couple hundred yards, to the Yellow Solo Gas Station. That's where the trooper dropped Hummel off. There is a pay phone around the corner, but the family says Hummel only had 17 cents in his pocket.
"Why didn't you give him a ride?" said Sullivan. "Why didn't you call somebody? Why didn't you take him to jail? He said there was only two of them on duty and he couldn't babysit them all."
"If he would have established that he wanted to do something other than walk, the trooper could have made provisions to try to contact a taxi or possibly make a call to see if they could get some assistance from a family member," said Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Pat Riordan.
Several witnesses told WCJB they had to swerve to avoid him walking down the road. Six miles and a couple hours later, FHP says Hummel was the victim of a hit and run crash on the side of State Road 349 less than a mile from home.
"I will miss him every single day, every single moment of the rest of my life on this earth," Sullivan.
Many Dixie County businesses have glass jars asking people to help the family pay funeral expenses. The family and state troopers plead anyone with information about the hit and run accident to contact FHP at 1-800-387-1290, Extension 120.
