Kid Brings Guns to School
A high school student was arrested after he brought a gun to school. Police say the gun was unloaded and jammed....
We actually spoke to the juvenile's mother on the phone earlier and she told us...this isn't his first weapons offense at west port high school.
Last year...same kind of situation...kids were picking on him...and he brought a knife to scare them.
His mother says...school officials found out...and made him go to an alternative school...obviously he didn't learn his lesson.
It was this 22 caliber revolver...Corporal Richard Knobeloch...says the 17 year old senior brought into his office just this morning.
"Well the student actually came to me into my office...and said he was having some problems with some kids at the school."
He told the school resource officer...he had this gun in his back pack.
"I could tell something was weighing on him...he kept coming in he...came in for a minute...then walked back out in the hallway...and then he came back and then I told the two young ladies I was talking to in my office...they needed to go."
Because of Marion County schools zero tolerance for weapons on campus policy...even though the student turned himself in....he was still arrested and brought to the juvenile assessment center.
He's now facing charges of possession of a firearm on a school campus.
West port parent... Agnes Osbourne says it all goes back to discipline.
"When I was going to school it was totally different."
She says the big difference is in how children are raised.
"Parents...and the government...and the state...not letting you discipline your child the way they need to be disciplined..."
"We spell it out very clearly...the students know...what they are allowed what they are not allowed to have on campus... A high school student knows they can't have any type of weapon on campus..."
And that's because even having an unloaded gun on campus can backfire.
"You know...we go through all the different things that could have happened...if he had pulled that gun out in the bus loop..in front of the kids...I don't need to tell you all the things that could have happened"
West port had one other case of a student bringing a gun to school last year...that student claimed he brought it as protection as well.
The school does offer amnesty for students that accidentally bring weapons to school as long as they immediately report it to school officials.
