WMD Simulation Lab
A disaster on wheels rolled into North Central Florida today and firefighter paramedics were ready for it.
In the latest training opportunity for first responders... a state contractor called the "Emergency Medicine Learning and Resource Center" brought a simulated terrorist attack to Gainesville.
Paramedics have minutes to get this simulated victim of a terrorist attack to the hospital because they do not know which illness they are dealing with.
Firefighter paramedics are fully experiencing what it is like to treat a patient with symptoms of anthrax.
"Anything an actual person can do more or less he's going to do himself-- he breathes we can sit and listen to lung sounds and see if he's breathing adequately or if he's got a popped lunch or any kind of {name of disease} its going to be evident you can listen to heart sounds."
This mobile sim lab is worth nearly 2 million dollars. The bus has a full ambulance bay and an emergency department to bring real life scenarios to emergency workers.
But how accurately did fire rescue paramedics help firefighter bond? E-M-L-R-C's clinical coordinator says things went smoothly for a practice shot.
"They got a real story behind the patient and they were able to verbalize with the patient but they were able to believe that this was a real call and to be able to treat it as a real call."
So they can be prepared when the call really comes.
E-M-L-R-C workers say that this sim lab will train first responders all over Florida.
