Searching for Haleigh
Searchers haven't given up despite the difficult terrain in the wild woods.
But it's over, for now.
Putnam County Sheriff's officials say they are suspending the ground search, after a week off not finding Haleigh, and focusing more on the investigation.
"We don't stop searching. We're taking a more tactical approach," Dominick Pape, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, said.
Haleigh disappeared last Monday night from her mobile home in Satsuma.
About 60 law enforcement officers from several different agencies began their search at 8 a.m., scouring the woods for the final time... unless there are any leads that need to be followed.
"As far as the tips we're receiving, depending on the urgency of the tip, we had troops ready to deploy," Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy said.
Volunteers say the search wasn't easy...
"They were having to fight their way through with machetes," Penny Combs, a volunteer, said.
A few miles from the Pomona Park area where the searchers were, customers crowded in to Mema's Diner on State Road 17...and many of them had one thing on their minds.
"That's pretty much all they're talking about...it's very sad," Carol Doss, Mema's manager, said.
For the volunteers who've worked all week long to find Haleigh, they say it's important to not give up.
"It's important for everybody to pull together and do their part,"
Putnam County officials said they will have another ground search in the next few days... in response to a tip they received.
Yesterday they moved the command center from Haleigh's neighborhood to the Putnam County operations center where they will continue to process the 500 leads that have come in.
