Abandoned Pets
With no money and little food on the table, some families are looking for ways to cut back on spending. In these hard times, the pressure may fall on the family pet. Helpless and starving, Emily was left to die on abandoned property. She is just one of the many animals that has been rescued by the humane society. Workers say animals are being left behind and it's all because of the economy. Like 8 year old Dobora, who was left on the doorstep two days ago. The owner attached this note saying he was sorry. Kirk Eppenstein of Alachua County says, "People are losing their apartments and homes and don't know what to do about their animals." At this rate, it's frightening.
Tina Coyler has been with the Humane Society since December. For the last month, she has received at least 2 to 3 calls a day from people who can't handle the pressure of the economy. The Humane Society is a no kill shelter. They're expecting to move into a new building next year. Until then, they can only worry if they will become overcrowded themselves.
