Wounds may soon be healing faster thanks to a new type of bandage created by University of Florida researchers.
The FDA has approved the sale of the Numbus Barrier Gauze, a special type of gauze which prevents bacteria from making its way back into a wound. Experts say it can reduce the number of times a bandage needs to be changed and help speed up recovery time.
"It provides an effective and novel microbicidal barrier that prevents bacteria from penetrating through the dressing to the surface of the wound and also prevents bacteria growing on the dressing both of which reduce the likelihood that a new infection will develop."
It took the FDA three years to approve the gauze as part of a process that clears medical products that are unlike any others in use.
Experts say the gauze could ultimately help to fight antibiotic resistant staph infections.
