Tebow's Reason for Returning
Story by TV20's Crispin Lopez
It was the moment when Gator football fans let out a big cheer and collective sigh of relief. Tim Tebow saying back in January he would return for his senior season. There was another big announcement Thursday when Tebow said his reason for returning wasn't for the chance to win another title.
"It was to have an impact on today's youth," said Tim Tebow while in Tallahassee. "Something that most athletes don't ever take the time to think about."
That impact will be through fund-raising. NCAA officials say the organization worked with UF, the Southeastern Conference, and Tebow family for a few months to interpret and apply its bylaws related to extra benefits and promotional activities. They didn't change any rules for Tebow, but made sure his fund-raising would be allowed under their rules.
"We consider all kinds of different situations on a case by case basis," said Erik Christianson, NCAA Director for Public and Media Relations. "Working cooperatively to reach a solution."
That solution allows Tebow to raise money for Uncle Dick's Home. The NCAA says this orphanage in the Philippines is a separate financial entity from the Bob Tebow Evangelistic Association, and that there are no Tebow family members who serve on the board of directors or staff.
"Those donations to that orphanage or any other non-profit from the university, from boosters, those are allowed under our bylaws," said Christianson.
Gator fans say Tebow's revelation about his reason to return is fine with them.
"I think him choosing to come back to help support a charity and take up that leadership role...I think that's a big decision for a young man to make," said University of Florida graduate student Beverly Hinojosa.
"It's just not about all these amazing runs or how he throws the ball. It's about how he acts as a person...I mean going to the Philippines," said University of Florida freshman Scott Gulig. "It's not all about him being a football player. It's about him being a role model."
A role model both in Gainesville and overseas.
