Delray Beach Man Attacked Woman, Attempted a Carjacking
A Delray Beach man was taken into custody today (May 28) after attacking a woman and attempting to carjack her Volkswagon.
The suspect is identified as Christopher H. Kelly, 28, out of Delray Beach, Fla.
Ocala police officers responded to Churchill Square, 303 S.E. 17th St. in Ocala, in reference to an in-progress incident in the parking lot around 11:46 a.m.
Ocala police were advised by a citizen that a woman was screaming and the car alarm to a yellow Volkswagon Bug was going off.
The suspect was trying to take the woman’s car, and citizens were trying to assist her, according to the Ocala Police Department.
Officers arrived on scene and observed citizens detaining him.
They were able to immediately take Kelly into custody without further incident.
The victim in this incident advised officers that she had been finishing her lunch while sitting in her car when Kelly approached, according to OPD.
She advised that he made some comments of a sexual nature to her and grabbed her physically through the window.
She opened her car door and used it to knock Kelly to the ground. she then exited the car, taking the keys with her.
She began screaming for help and activated the alarm on her car from the remote. Kelly got up and tried to push the car out of the parking space, regardless of the missing keys.
Citizens in the parking lot who had witnessed the incident came to the aid of the victim.
Rodney Guinn, a local paramedic, was one of the citizens who responded over to assist. He advised that it was apparent that Kelly was under the influence of something, which included being extremely intoxicated.
Guinn began trying to reason with Kelly in an attempt to get him to remain until police arrived.
While Guinn was speaking with him, Kelly began trying to open doors to other cars in the parking lot. He did get physical with Guinn at one point, but Guinn was able to push him away and continue to talk to him. Police then arrived and were able to take Kelly into custody.
Kelly is charged with one count of carjacking and one count of battery.
He was transported by ambulance to Monroe Regional Medical Center for treatment. Once cleared from there, he will be booked into the Marion County Jail.
