Watermelon Season and the Rain
For the past three days, North Central Florida has been dealing with some major rain. Rain reaching up to five inches for the month of may. Farmers say watermelon season, which is one of the busiest, was a little late this year. Not because of the rain, but because there was no rain. The watermelons had to be irrigated. If the rain continues at this pace, it could be damaging for the fruit and the company as well. Farmers tell us 3 to 5 inches are good, anything past that is bad.
"We'll have rain all week and it's not really he time of year we like to have rain, I don't think we have damage to any crops yet, but if it keeps on it'll be damaging", said Olav Helgerud.
But not just the watermelons, same goes for other fruits and vegetables. The rain has put the brakes on production and farmers say they want this cast of rain to end soon, so they're not stuck tossing dozens of melons out.
