Search For Next GPD Chief
The people who applied for the position of Gainesville's police chief are a diverse group. Some have led national law enforcement agencies. While others have no experience at all.
Among a list of 93 individuals is likely the name of the man or woman who will serve as the next GPD chief. Before this list makes it to the city manager's office it will be whittled down to a total of 10 to 20 "highly qualified" individuals.
" We don't want someone who's always trying to be the star, but we want someone who's visible," said Gainesville City Manager Russ Blackburn. "Someone who people feel good about."
Two members of GPD applied for the position. References for Maj. Richard Hanna include Chief Botsford and Tony Jones.
Capt. Lonnie Scott also applied. He notes in his cover letter that he doesn't meet the requirement of at least eight years as a captain, but says that's not consistent with the essential functions of chief.
Finalists should be selected by early July. Interviews will follow in August and Blackburn says a final decision will be made before August 15th.
