The Gainesville Police Department will soon have more officers on the street.

Eight new officers were sworn in this afternoon.

The recruits will begin agency-specific training this week. GPD officials say they're glad the agency is still hiring -- even in tight budget times.

The new officers will fill existing vacant positions.
