Noche de Gala
The red carpet was rolled out this evening in Micanopy to benefit the Sebastian Ferrero Foundation, and the turnout was anything but disappointing.
It was a night to remember: the second annual Noche De Gala, a fundraiser benefiting the Sebastian Ferrero foundation.
Tonight, hundreds turned out in Micanopy to support the foundation and the family who have made it a goal to build a state of the art, full service children's hospital in Gainesville.
Three-year-old Sebastian Ferrero died in October 2007 as a result of a medication overdose followed by a series of medical errors. Now, Sebastian's parents are making it a priority to build a children's hospital in Gainesville.
Saturday night, they moved closer to that dream. The Sebastian Ferrero Foundation held its second annual Noche de Gala in Micanopy. The event is a black tie venetian themed masquerade charity event. The money raised is going towards building that hospital. Sebastian's father knows this couldn't be possible without the help from others.
"We're very excited. This is another sold out event that shows the steadfast community support. We have 95 sponsors, 200 volunteers working very hard to make this event come to life and we're very excited."
More than 150 community pediatricians, specialists and parents have united with Shands Healthcare and the University of Florida College of Medicine to support the mission. Dr. Michael Good from UF says it's the ultimate party with a purpose.
"We remember Sebastian Ferrero, and in doing so, the courage of his parents in moving forward and improving care in our hospitals and in our clinics and in our communities."
Guests were treated to a silent auction, a horse show and opera performances, not to mention a spectacular dining room.
Shands CEO Tim Goldfarb says the event not only highlights the importance of remembering Sebastian, but also the significance of healthcare in this country.
"I think it's a spectacular event for the foundation in part, for the community really to draw the community together about patient safety which is not only a local theme, but if you watch national healthcare reform, it's the thing of national healthcare reform."
The Ferreros say they are thankful for the community support and the help from the hundreds of vounteers and dedicated staff who made this night one to remember. "We're very grateful and together we will all make this happen."
The Ferreros are underwriting all administrative costs and Gala expenses with their dollar for dollar match up to one million dollars.
