"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" Chooses Gainesville Family

Published December 7th, 2009

One lucky North Central Florida family got the surprise of a lifetime Monday morning. It's been in the making for weeks, and today "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" went knocking on the door of the Wagstaff family in Northeast Gainesville.

TV20's Crispin Lopez spoke with them about what they're calling a "blessing."

"It hasn't sunk in yet. This is pretty awesome. This is pretty awesome."

That was Tobin Wagstaff's reaction when Ty Pennington and the design team from "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" showed up at his family's home in Northeast Gainesville. The Wagstaffs were one of five finalists in Gainesville and Monday morning found out they'd be getting a new home.

"If it wasn't us, then we were going to go help wherever that was. Whoever was chosen for that," said Tobin Wagstaff. "Us being chosen is not something that we expected. We feel very blessed."

Tobin and his wife Jill live on 1415 NE 7th St. with their four children. The street has been blocked off as TV and build crews prepare for the massive project. The couple said they're still in shock from the announcement and what it will mean for their kids.

"We're seeing emotions in them that we haven't seen before. They're good emotions though. I think they really appreciate this and that's what important to us as parents."

The family runs a non-profit music school and arts center they started in 2002 called "Studio Percussion Inc." There's only enough money to pay Tobin's salary so his wife also works as a pre-school teacher. Leaving little to go toward much-needed home repairs, and that's where the show steps in.

"It's bringing the community together to do something good for an individual family," said Rodney Rogers, who lives a few houses down. "I just hope that after the buses leave and after the film crews leave that Gainesville doesn't stop there."

Over the next seven days hundreds of volunteers will come together to build the new home, and the Wagstaffs plan to build plenty of memories in the process.

"We're going to make a point to take the time to really enjoy the experience."
