Helping Haiti Part 2
Two weeks ago Tuesday, Haiti was rocked by a 7.0 earthquake. That earthquake has claimed thousands of lives, including many Americans.
But what it hasn't claimed is the outpouring of compassion and goodwill of the American people. In the second part of our series on Helping Haiti, TV20s Robert Bradfield reports on how the country, including North Central Florida, is helping to rebuild Haiti's future.
If there's one thing we've learned from Haiti's devastating earthquake, the generosity of the American spirit is alive and well.
Across this country, communities, households, individuals are making a big difference in the lives of those most affected by this horror in Haiti.
In Pennsylvania, Henry Fisher's homes for Haiti mission aims to bring temporary housing to Haiti's homeless.
$600 bucks will provide a temporary house which will go along way.
In Sedgwick County Kansas, volunteers are waiting around the block to help fill food boxes. Volunteers are working hard. They're on pace to produce nearly 100-thousand meals an hour.
Paramedics in Chicago will have to do without three ambulances - they are donating them to Haiti. Firefighters are scheduled to drive them to Florida.
Even here in Florida, people are doing their part. Members of a Miami church are gathering supplies to send south. this is their third load...
In North Central Florida, the affects of giving here and are being felt over there. Local organizer Sister Hazel has been collecting bags - lots of bags. She's been to Haiti and is running a center out of her own home.
TV20 was at the Gainesville Regional Airport when a group of local doctors and medical personnel were gathering supplies. And on Monday we reported on the efforts to bring shoes and wheelchairs to the country's needy. The American spirit - giving hope to a country in despair.
