As the weather continues to warm up more sturgeon will head into the Suwannee River and that means added hazards for boaters and water enthusiasts. No one knows why sturgeon leap out of the river at random times. Since 2006 state stats show 14 people were injured by the jumping fish. Some of the them grow more than five feet and weigh more than fifty pounds. Even standing still a collision can injure someone but when you are going full speed, it can be disastrous. Most of the fish are spotted when the river is low. Boaters should slow down and maybe even avoid hot spots where the sturgeon are most common. If you hit a sturgeon, you are encouraged to report it to Florida Wildlife Commission at 1-888-404-3922.
