Lake Weir Middle School Student Hit By Truck, Dies

A Lake Weir Middle School student died after she was hit by a truck at her bus stop Friday morning.
The student was an eighth grader at Lake Weir Middle in rural southeast Marion County. She was waiting for her bus around 9 a.m. when she darted in front of oncoming traffic. The accident happened near the girl’s home, and several other students witnessed it.
Grief counselors were on hand when the school principal notified students and staff around 12 p.m.
The principal also sent an ALERTnow telephone message to parents sharing the tragic news with them.
Counselors will also be on-hand at the school next Tuesday, when students return after the Memorial Day long weekend.
The Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident.
