Published July 23rd, 2010
Two firefighters are recovering from injuries and a homeowner is barely hanging on after a fire destroyed a house in southwest Gainesville on Thursday night. Gainesville Fire Rescue said the house caught on fire last night sometime around 11 pm. When firefighters arrived half of the house was engulfed in flames. Richard Haynes and his wife Jan Elliot escaped but then she went back inside to save her dog. She then succumbed to the smoke and had to be rescued by firefighters. Paramedics took Elliot to the hospital in critical condition where she is struggling to survive. Both firefighters were treated and released from the hospital. Alachua County Firefighters and the State Fire Marshal are investigating the cause of the fire.
