Palmer-Pigweed Hurting Peanut Harvest
Published September 17th, 2010
It is peanut harvesting time and over the next few weeks you might see the farmers busy in their fields. This season the yield might be smaller for North Central Florida farmers and its not because of the weather. A weed called Palmer-Pigweed that is resistant to most herbicides has continued to creep into peanut fields. Without the right methods and techniques to manage the weed it takes over fields making it impossible to grow peanuts. A method called weed wiping with herbicide helps but some weeds survive making for more of a problem next year. Barton Wilder, Alachua County Extension, says if farmers don't spend the extra time and money to fight the pigweed, farmers might not be able to grow peanuts in the future.
