Depot Avenue/Main Street Construction Updates
They're moving on down the road with a road construction project in Downtown Gainesville and they're about to complete another.
While the new and improved Depot Avenue is about to debut and the Main Street project is looking to move North, commuters aren't the only one's looking forward to an easier route.
Depot Avenue has been under construction for more than a year and a half. Tomorrow it's scheduled to be mostly re-opened.
That, along with the progression of the Main Street Construction project is why some local businesses are expecting more traffic.
Ryan Premdas said, "I'm really looking forward to all the change."
The Warehouse Restaurant and Lounge on South Main Street, just North of Depot Avenue, opened in May as Main Street construction paused in front of their main entrance.
But General Manager Premdas said they've done alright, with business getting better as construction moves North. He said, "People who haven't been in the area, once they're able to travel their normal route if they haven't seen us they will start to see us."
Even though Main Street won't be completed until early summer, Premdas said now that Depot Avenue is re-opening, he's certain they'll get more customers. Premdas said, "Once it opens up it's gonna allow people the ease of travel from East to West to turn onto Main Street."
Chip Skinner from Gainesville Public Works said before the official completion on Valentine's Day, there will be two minor closures.
Skinner said, "At the same time we'll be closing the Northbound turn lane onto Southeast 3rd Street, so people will have to go to Southeast 2nd Street in order to access GRU or the Rosa Parks Downtown Station."
On February 7th the turnlane will re-open and the 4th Avenue round-a-bout will close for a week. But as commuters begin using Depot Avenue again, there are still detours on Main Street to be aware of.
Laurie Windham said, "Right now we are in the process of completing the area of Southwest 2nd Avenue, we're looking at moving to Southwest 1st Avenue. We're hoping for the fourteenth of February...it will be within a day or two of that date."
Windham said the Department of Transportation is working with the affected business owners to make sure they aren't cut off from their customers. It's an inconvenience that The Warehouse has experienced but Premdas feels it will be worth it.
Premdas said, "I'm anticipating it, I've been highly anticipating it from day one since we've been open."
Before completion, the Main Street Project will move North across University Avenue.
