Cabot Tar Clean-Up Finished
An expensive makeover is finished. Workers have completed a project to remove tar deposits from Springstead and Hogtown Creeks. About forty years ago, tar spilled into the creeks from the former Cabot Corporation site which is now a shopping center on NW 23rd Avenue and Main Street. The tar is not toxic to humans but affects the water quality and aquatic life. Work started in February to re-route the creeks and then dig out the tar. In all the project cost Cabot about a half million dollars. The next step in this long journey to clean-up the Cabot-Kopper Superfund site is to see if there is additional ground water contamination at the former Cabot site. The EPA has asked Cabot to put some deeper wells in to see if there is additional contamination and more remediation will be required. Work on the wells begin at the end of the month.
