Happy Friday everyone! Yes, "toasty" is a word that would accurately describe north-central Florida's weather this week. And this weekend may be no different. While it may be hot outside, there are some fun things to do around our area....just try to stay cool if you do venture outdoors.
Almost nothing sounds better on a hot afternoon than a cool slice of watermelon. Newberry celebrated the fruit a couple of weeks back...and now it's Chiefland's turn. The 57th Annual Chiefland Watermelon Festival may be just the place for you to cool off Saturday. You can enjoy free fresh sliced watermelon, live entertainment, plus food, arts and crafts and activities for the kids. If YOU have a prize watermelon you want to enter in the contest, the official weigh in runs from 7 to 9 in the morning. There'll be a parade at 10, followed by the opening ceremonies at 11 am. Noon is the time for you if you're looking to test your seed spitting skills. The festival runs until 5 on Saturday in Chiefland. Your text to link...
If it's blueberries that you crave you need to check out the Wellborn Blueberry Festival tonight and Saturday. The Suwannee County community is host to the festival for the 18th year now. There will be entertainment in downtown Wellborn tonight, with plenty of activities during the day Saturday. How about the Blueberry Pancake Breakfast (sounds awesome!) It runs from 7 to 10 Saturday morning. You can catch the parade at 10:30. There will be children's games, arts and crafts, and live music throughout the day. The festival wraps up around 5 p.m. To get there take I-75 north to Lake City, take the U.S. 90 exit and go west about 10 miles. Saturday in Alachua County, the City of Archer is hosting it's town festival Yulee Day. It was named after Senator David Yulee who opened the first cross-Florida railroad in 1861. Yulee Day features a parade, live music, lots of home cooked food....in addition to arts and crafts vendors. This year they are paying tribute to the railroad with a miniature train ride for kids. The activities get started at 9 Saturday morning....running until 4 in the afternoon. Just head west out Archer Road (State Road 24). The festivities are on West Main Street in Archer. If you want to stay indoors you might want to take in the Hipp's latest production, "Suds". It's the story of a young woman and four guardian angels who help her to find love....in a laundromat! The sixties musical soap opera, as it is called, runs through June 26th at the Hipp. Shows are tonight at 8, Saturday at 5 and 8:30, and Sunday at 2 and 7:30 at the Hippodrome in downtown Gainesville.
