State Raises Minimum Wage and Workers' Hopes
Times may be tough, but starting today minimum wage workers will get some extra cash added to their paycheck. Everyone I spoke to today was excited about the wage raise of 36 cents.
One was a high school student working a weekend gig at Subway. The other depended on her two jobs at TCBY and Walgreens to pay her bills.
“Only thing I really spend money on is gas," says Sean Miles. "so it’s a little extra gas money.”
“I had to get a second job," says Elena Hernandez, "because financially, I just can’t get anything, just working two jobs right now.”
Miles works at Subway and says he feels pretty good about his job...using his extra money to pay for his skate boarding hobby. Hernandez says she needs the extra money from both jobs to help her get to college.
Florida's minimum wage is now $7.76, up from $7.31.
