Pence Family Dances in Hopes of Winning $30,000 for Shands
Published March 29th, 2012
Sixteen families from across the country are competing to win a 30-thousand dollar prize and one of the families is from Gainesville.
TV 20's Yaremi Farinas tells us why winning is so important to the pence family.
That's a sneak peek of the video the Pence family put together to compete in the 3rd Annual Primrose Schools Dance- off.
Primrose promotes active families to fight obesity.
In online voting, the Pence family is neck in neck with another family from North Carolina.
If they get the most votes, they will receive $30,000 to give to their choice among Children's Miracle Hospitals and they'd receive $5,000 for the family.
"We feel an obligation to give back to the community and to give back to Shands, so that other children and families can experience what we experienced," said Nathan Pence.
At only three months old, their only son Tyler had a cleft lip repair at Shands hospital. The Pence family explains that this was a very difficult time for them because Tyler had complications after the surgery and there were days he wouldn't eat.
"It's kind of hard seeing your little brother have to go through that, so yes they did so much for us," said Tyler's sister Austin Pence.
Tyler is considered to be a miracle child. he hopes that by winning this contest there will be more miracle children at Shands.
"So I can save other kids lives and so I can be happy," said Tyler.
It only took two days to put the video together. The Pence family said that people are always comparing them to the Brady Bunch and that's why they went with that theme.
No winning family has ever supported Shands, so the pence family hopes to be the first.
"I would like everyone to know who votes for this that we have committed that $5,000 to Shands also. so they will get the entire $35,000."
But first they will need bunches of votes form their supporters.
