A New Home for Levy County Humane Society
Published April 14th, 2012
Daisy Mae is one of the dogs from Levy County Humane Society.
Since the society doesn't have a facility, the dogs have to be fostered.
Now with the new center they are starting out fresh.
After a board member was caught in the midst of a hoarding scandal.
"The humane society board and myself is really excited that we have a new place to call home," said Michelle Hagan.
Hagan is the President of the society.
She said they put $30,000 down for 5 acres of land in the heart of Bronson.
The Fender Griffin family donated $18,000 to the society.
Right now there's two old houses on the property.
"We are planning on reclaiming a lot of the items from the two homes. Whether it's the woods, doors, windows, different things like that so we can utilize it and restore some of that history of the buildings into our new facility," said Hagan.
The center will house rescued and abused animals.
The project is still in it's infant stage and no blue prints have been just yet.
Leaving a lot of work that has to get done before they get closer to opening up.
"We need the community to come together with us, We can't do this on our own. it took us seven years to raise the $30,000 we had in our building fund to buy this property and now to do more, we need the support of the community," said Mike Schenk, co -founder of the society.
The society is currently working on a low cost spay and neuter program.
Residents of Levy County would only be responsible for a $10 co-pay.
Now with the new property, there are some new projects the society has mind.
"In the back portion of the property we are looking to include a dog park for the residents of Levy County. We are going to try to memorialize that park in the Fender- Griffin family name," said Hagan.
