"Yes a little bit, but not totally surprised," said Bulkid Jain.
About what was going on in his community.
jain is a university of Florida student who lives at University Commons Apartments.
A place where the former property manager is being accused of doing more than just managing a business.
"The company that owns the apartment complex Gator Investments LLC., started noticing major discrepancies with the books that were kept at the apartment," said Gainesville Police Departments Public Information Officer Angelina Valuri.
Thrity-eight year-old Kathleen Sexton was arrested yesterday for allegedly stealing $22,000 from the company.
Sexton worked at University Commons since January, 2011. A year later the regional manager of the company confronted Sexton about the discrepancies.
"Miss Sexton claimed that all of the money she spent using a company check card and actual physical paper checks were spent on supplies for the apartment complex," said Valuri.
After two months of investigations, Gainesville Police Deaprtment detectives discovered that Sexton used the company card for personal needs, stole wooden flooring material and wrote a $2,500 check to renovate her home.
In addition to the $22,000 Sexton stole from the company, police said she also wrote out a $3100 check to buy herself a pick up truck.
We tried getting a statement from Steven Levin the regional manager of Gator Investments.
According to a property manager at University Commons identified only as "Angel," Levin is out of the country. She said they are leaving the investigation in the hands of the police.
Some residents wonder if an extra monthly utility charge has anything to do with the scam.
"I started thinking about my utility bills and i linked that with the fraud," Varun Rishi.
