Levy County FFA Kids Wait for Their Hard Earn Money

Published May 1st, 2012
Levy County's Future Farmers of America kids supposed to cash in on May 1, 2012 on their hard work over the past year.
They sold the cows to cattle broker Larry Lindsey, who then sold it to United Producers is Illinois.

Lindsey was supposed to get a $200,000  check from united producers.

Instead, the man he hired to transport the cattle, may have taken him for a ride.

"We are going to pay the kids regardless," said Loran Brookins.

About a month ago, 347 kids from the Levy County's  sold their cattle.

Brookins the President of the fair, said  Lindsey from Lindsey's Cattle Company bought 162 cows.

Brookins should have received a $200,000  check 10 days later.

"We were informed a week later that what had happened and he couldn't pay us at that time and he has not yet," said Brookins.

According to Levy County's Sheriff's Office, Lindsey contracted a man named Ron Shepard to transport the cattle toUunited Producers in Illnois.

"When Mr. Shepard delivered the cattle, he then received a check. Unfortunately United Producers made the check payable to Mr. Shepard's personal business," said Lt. Scott Tummond.

That business is "Brookfield Cattle" owned by Shepard and his partner Jeremy Pierce.

Shepard was supposed to return the money to Lindsey.

"Which would have paid for the cattle that he purchased. the money would have then been disbursed amongst the FFA children who has sold their cattle at the auction," said Tummond.

Pierce contacted law enforcement and reported Shepard missing shortly after the cattle was delivered.
The secretary for Lindsey's attorney Ray Earl Thomas said he was not available to speak to us at the moment.

"This is such a unique experience and occurrence in this area. There would have been nothing they couldn't have done anyting to prevent this," said Tummond.

Brookins said he has done business with Lindsey for the past three years.

"This no way reflects the way we do things, It's the first time that's ever happened," said Brookins.

The kids will get their money.
The Suwannee River Fair Board will come up with about $182,000 to give the kids the money they worked all year to earn.

"We've been very conservative, we got some money saved up and we got to go make a small loan and pay the kids," said Brookins.

Pierce is currently behind bars in Illinois while Shepard is still on the loose.
