Weekend Planner
Happy Friday everyone! We are prepared with a mix of things to do this weekend...
Move over watermelons, it's time for the blackberries to have the spotlight. Saturday in Hamilton County north of Lake City, the Wild Blackberry Festival will be held in Jasper. You can try the blackberry pancake breakfast from 7 to 10 Saturday morning. There'll also be live entertainment, antique cars, in addition to kids activities and arts and crafts. The event runs from 8 am to 2 pm at Heritage Village in downtown Jasper. Just head north on I-75 and take exit 451. Then turn left, heading north on highway 129 to Jasper. Website
To the south in Marion County, this weekend is your last opportunity to catch the play Fiddler on the Roof. The story centers around a father and his five daughters....and their lives in Tsarist Russia back in the early 1900's. The original Broadway production of the show opened in 1964 and it's Broadway's 15th longest running show in history. You can check it out this weekend at the Ocala Civic Theater, 4337 East Silver Springs Boulevard in Ocala. Showtimes are tonight at 8, Saturday at 2 and 8 pm, and Sunday at 2 pm. Website
In southern Alachua County the town of Micanopy is recognizing the 176th anniversary of the Battle of Micanopy. The battle was part of the Second Seminole War (sometimes called the Florida War) that lasted from 1835 to 1842. There'll be period crafts, demonstrations and a dedication of the Native American Heritage Preserve. The event commemorating the battle goes from 10 am to 5 pm Saturday with the main event at 2 pm. It's at the Micanopy Historical Museum, 607 Cholokka Boulevard in Micanopy. Website
If you enjoy Greek food and culture you might want to take a quick trip to St. Augustine this weekend. Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church is hosting what's called "My Big Fat Greek Food Festival". The event will feature all kinds of food (like lamb, gyros, and Aegean chowder, for example). There'll also be dancing, a kids area, live music and more. The festival runs from 10 to 8 Saturday and noon to 7 Sunday at the church located at 2940 County Road 214 (also known as West King Street) in St. Augustine. Website
Enjoy your weekend!
