Weekend Planner
Happy Friday everyone! July can bring some hot and humid weather. But if you're willing to brave the heat, there are some cool things you can do this weekend.
You can sharpen your fishing skills...or learn how to fish Saturday in northwest Gainesville. UF's Fishing for Success program is hosting it's Summer Fun Family Fishing Day at the UF ponds. The folks at Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences at UF will have seven ponds stocked with catfish, bluegill and largemouth bass for anglers to test out. The event is designed to allow families to have a fun and safe morning of fishing. The event goes from 8 am to noon and is free for the public. And it is catch and release. The UF ponds are located just north of Millhopper Road at 7922 NW 71st Street in Gainesville. Website
If you're interested in antiques you may want to head north to White Springs Saturday. The Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park is hosting Antique Arts and Collectibles Day. At the event you'll get a chance to meet collectors and learn how they started collecting the antiques and unique art on display. And there'll be a wide variety of collections there....from furniture to dolls to farm equipment and a lot more. The event runs from 10 am to 4 pm Saturday. The park is on highway 41 in White Springs. Website
Country music fans in southern Marion County will get a chance to see "the Grand Lady of the Grand Ole Opry" this weekend. Saturday night Jean Shepard, a trailblazer for women in country music is appearing at the Orange Blossom Opry. Shepard has been a singer-songwriter of country and honky tonk tunes for about 60 years...with a couple dozen albums under her belt. The show starts at 7:30 Saturday night.
