Thieves Caught on Camera
Published August 28th, 2012
ALACHUA COUNTY - Detectives are looking for two men who've been withdrawing money from ATM machines across North Central Florida.
The problem is they don't have an account, and they are targeting one specific bank in Alachua county.
The men have stolen about $2,000 from three M & S bank locations and detectives believe it's a scam that's happening in other counties.
There is security video showing two Hispanic males walking up to the ATM at the M & S bank in Melrose.
One man licks a receipt and covers the camera.
From there they start their scam.
The men use a valid ATM card from South America, enter a pin number and then request the maximum limit on the card.
"When the money is disbursed, they are somehow then manipulating the machine, causing it to read an error code and showing that the money wasn't dispensed.
It's shutting the machine down and canceling the transaction," said Det. Tony Tell with the Alachua County Sheriff's Office.
The men walk away with some or all of the money. Tell said the men have targeted three M & S branches: One in Hawthorne, one in Melrose and one on Tower Road in Alachua County.
The thieves struck three times on Aug. 18 and three more times on Aug. 22.
"They're older banks. I think that's why they're been targeted. Two of the banks are more on the outskirts areas not directly in town," said Tell.
He said the men park far from the bank and usually stop by when the bank is closed.
"When nobody is around because they are somehow manipulating the machine and it becomes obvious they are not doing what they are suppose to be doing at the ATM machine," said Tell. "That we know for sure these two guys have done at least two other counties," said Tell.
He said both men are caught on camera doing the same scam in Hillsborough and Marion counties and it's possible they've hit other places in Florida.
"They're are traveling throught the state. I am not sure where they are from possibly out of the country," said Tell.
We spoke to Frank Graddy who is the Senior Vice President of M & S bank. He said no customer accounts have been affected.
If you have any information about the men contact Alachua County Sheriff's Office.
