Weekend Planner
Happy Friday everyone! Whether it feels fall like or not here, there's plenty to do around our area this weekend.
Tonight the Phillips Center is hosting Gainesville's own Sister Hazel. It's hard to believe that the group started here almost 20 years ago now. The band has done a lot in almost two decades of time....cranking out several albums, in addition to playing around 100 dates annually. Tonight's concert in town kicks off the University of Florida Performing Arts 2012-2013 season. Show time is 7:30 tonight at the Phillips Center. Website
To the north in Columbia County, the Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park is hosting the Olustee Civil War Expo Saturday. The Expo is a day of authentic military drills, music, storytelling and exhibits that allows you to experience what life was like during the war in the 1800's. The Expo runs from 10 to 3 Saturday. To get there from I-75, take the U.S. 90 exit at Lake City and travel east about 20 miles to the park. Website
If you want to do something different this weekend you may want to head to Williston. Two Tails Ranch there is having it's first annual Elephant Appreciation Day fundraiser. You'll get a chance to learn about elephants....and perhaps get a glimpse of zebras, ostriches and other animals. There'll also be pony rides, activities for the kids, live music and food. The event runs from 11 am to 5 Saturday afternoon at the ranch located at 18655 NE 81st Street in Williston. Proceeds support the ranch. Website
In Gainesville, the Hippodrome's 40th anniversary season is underway. The Tony award-winning play Other Desert Cities is wrapping up it's run at the Hipp this weekend. The play revolves around a well to do family, living their dream in southern California. But that all may fall apart when a daughters' tell all memoir reveals a family secret. Show times are tonight at 8, Saturday at 5 and 8:30 pm....with shows at 2 and 7 pm Sunday. Website
Not that you would forget, but the Gators take on Kentucky in the Swamp just after noon Saturday.
Enjoy your weekend!
